Having looked at Paul Newman’s horoscope from a psychological view point and the patterns made, we are now ready to look at the Solar Arc. This is a measurement of one degree equalling one year of age and gives us a guide to the things that may influence us during that year.

Starting at the zero point, draw an arrow pointing up and then move the arrow anti clock wise to 30 (this inside chart is the movable chart. The degree for 30 fits into the cardinal pattern of 0 – 30 degrees.)

At age 30, Paul Newman got his first major movie debut when he secured a role in the movie, “The Silver Chalice.” His father had died in 1950 and for a short time Newman maintained his role in the family sporting business but the cry to acting was so strong he sold out and moved on.

Now move the arrow to the degree of 30 which equals his age when his first movie was released.. By solar arc, we see planet Mercury = Node/Saturn. Now we need to refer to our planetary key words at the end of the lesson or the book, “Combination of Stellar Influences” by Ebertin (hereafter referred to as ‘CSI’) to see the probable manifestations in this mans 30th year.

Newman’s father had mistrusted show business and viewed it as a profession without security or real prospects. Reflecting on his father’s premature death years later, Newman admitted to lingering sadness and frustration over their awkward, unresolved relationship. Arthur Newman died at 56 years of age.

So with the Node/Saturn in the natal chart being triggered by Mercury at the time of his movie debut one could say that even though it was a major achievement for Newman (His Mercury in Capricorn ruling concentration, thoroughness, endurance, patience and ambition being the driving force) because it was to the Saturn Node of the natal chart it does indicate to me that there was also a certain degree of sadness and disappointment.

An accurate reflection of the circumstances. Patience and endurance to reflect his lifelong dream of becoming a movie star and sadness because his father was not alive to justify his decision not work in the family business. Also the film was not successful and it took several more years and films before he hit the big time. Some considerations then are.

  1. Patience, endurance, ambition being the driving force.
  2. Sadness and disappointment.

Eventually over a period of years and small movie parts, his talent led to a role in the Tennessee Williams film, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” for which he was nominated for an Oscar as best actor. Although he was extremely honoured and excited to be nominated, he did not win.
