In a few moments we will look at this solar arc in detail but before we do we need too analyse his personality. Now go back to the natal chart and see listed underneath the signs in the natal positions.
Sun: First we note that Paul Newman’s Sun sign is Aquarius. The sun sign plays an important role as it represents our ego, our outward personality, the side that we show to the outside world. People born under the sign of Aquarius are what astrologers term the humanitarian’s of the zodiac. These people usually have an agenda to make the world a better place.
Aquarians by nature are kind, friendly, independent and often quite unpredictable as they go about the business of daily living. Aquarian’s are quite comfortable living in luxury, but are just as much at home in a shabby one room apartment whilst they go about promoting better living conditions for the poor. ‘Where ever I lay my hat, that’s my home,’ is the Aquarian philosophy.
Generally speaking, Aquarian’s dislike routine. A nine-to-five office job is definitely out of the question. Along with collecting a multitude of friends, the Aquarian personality usually has a conglomeration of pets. However, just when you think you have these beautiful people figured out, they will go ahead and do something totally different.
Conforming is not one of their attributes. Aquarian’s need to make a physical statement that they are different. In today’s modern society, they are usually the ones with all the earrings and funny coloured hair.
Paul Newman however, is very conservative considering his Aquarian Sun sign and as we go through his horoscope, we will see that the sign of Capricorn plays an important role in determining his personality. He has Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and the Ascendant in that sign. Paul Newman’s Sun sign tells us that he is an Aquarian, but because of all the planets in Capricorn we could say that is his signature. Our personality can be viewed as an enigma with several different factors playing an important role.
Next we look to see what sign the Moon is in. The Moon also plays an important role, as this is the sign through which we express our feelings and emotions. Paul Newman’s horoscope has the Moon in the sign of Pisces and this sign blends well with his Aquarian personality. It adds an extremely creative and poetic influence to his nature.
The combination of Aquarian/Pisces is very intuitive and this would help very much in his work as an actor. He would have no trouble playing character roles and following hunches, which would often pay dividends.
Mercury is the next planet in focus. This planet influences the mind and communication skills of all kind. Paul Newman has Mercury in the sign of Capricorn. This position endows a person with all the mental attributes of the proverbial strong and silent type. Mercury in this sign also gives good a good memory and the capacity for hard work. Venus, planet of love and beauty is also in the sign of Capricorn and this can make a person shy in matters-of-the-heart. Never the less these people do care very deeply. This sign also gives consistency of feelings, self-control and faithfulness. Perhaps having Venus in this sign is the secret to why Paul Newman is faithful in the romance department. Tennis star Boris Becker recently quoted Paul Newman in a newspaper article entitled “How five seconds cost Boris $5m.” He said,
He then quoted Hollywood star, Paul Newman who was reported to have said, on the subject of fidelity, “I get hungry outside but I always eat the juicy steak at home.”
In Newman’s chart Mars, planet of energy and drive is in the sign of Aries and this encourages strong desires. People with Mars in Aries are ardent, impulsive and enterprising and like an element of risk in their lives. We see this played out in his love of racing cars. Paul Newman has not only dedicated himself to an acting career but is also a true business professional. He donates all the profit from his $125 million dollar a year spaghetti business to charity.
Jupiter, planet of good fortune stands for optimism, expansion and fortunate happenings. Jupiter is also in the sign of Capricorn. People with this combination have a strong sense of duty and a regard for tradition and law. They are quietly but determinedly ambitious. They think on a grand scale but do not overlook the fine details of life.
Saturn, planet of discipline and restraint is in the sign of Scorpio another strong placement and is a test of endurance. The placement of Saturn in this sign gives Newman a tremendous amount of drive and determination to succeed. Saturn in Scorpio individuals can be strongly sexual or give the appearance of being strongly sexual and there is no dought that Newman has always had the allure of a very sexual being.
Paul Newman has been the ‘heart throb’ of the big screen for over 50 year. He certainly portrays all the charm, and debonair qualities of the male Aquarian/Scorpio personality on screen. However, behind the scenes, the strong Capricorn qualities make him a reluctant hero and his disciplined personality makes him look but not touch, in regard to other women. As we can see, Saturn can reveal much about the personality.
Uranus/Neptune/Pluto are the last of the planets and are considered generational influences so for the purpose of our beginner’s lesson we will not give any interpretations. Because they are so slow moving they can influence a certain position for a long time. Many horoscopes have the same planet placement by sign and by degree. However, when one or more, contact a personal planet they certainly can have an influence on the personality. These outer planets will be dealt with in later lessons.
The Ascendant, Mid Heaven and the Vertex are used only when we have a correct time of birth. Again these will be dealt with in later lessons. Chiron is a more modern addition to interpretations and this also will be looked at in future lessons.
Putting It All Together.
It is essential to check out the qualities of the personality before one makes a prediction. The planets and signs give a guide to what lies ahead but we really need to know how we work on the inside. Being the unique individual that we are, each person sees and views the circumstances of life differently.
How one person handles a situation, could be quite different as to how another person views the same set of circumstances.
Paul Newman was the product of a well-to-do family in the sporting goods business. He had a good education and graduated from college with a B.A. in economics and dramatics. He studied drama at Yale. Newman said,
“acting is the only thing I came close to doing well. I realised that when I found I had no gift for the sporting-goods business.”
And aren’t we glad he found that potential acting talent.
